However ,starting from the month of June and November, some of the early or late wildebeest are commencing their crossings of the Mara River. Its incredible that more than half a million wildebeest are born each year . The month of  February and March in south east Serengeti  is the peak Calving season in Serengeti .

A new  born  calve weighs 20 kg and can  weigh up to 270 kg. It rises at shoulder height to 4 feet 6 inches, and it can live up to 20 years. 

As many as 250,000 wildebeest perish from attacks by predators or from hunger, thirst or exhaustion. Another  important fact is that about 30,000 zebras are killed off.

The countless herds have amassed along the swollen Mara River, a final barrier from the short sweet grasses of the Masai Mara. Sometimes the crossing place they choose is shallow hence allowing the majority of animals to pass safely. In other areas the waters boil with drowning wildebeest and slashing crocodiles.
